Nightmare Frontier Combat and Ricochet Guide
Master deterministic gunfights in Nightmare Frontier: positioning, hazards, shove combos, and handgun ricochet off metal interactables.

Nightmare Frontier fights are turn-based puzzles with guns. There are no percentage to-hit rolls. Every scavenger action, enemy priority, cover edge, and interactable is information you can read. This page is the combat curriculum behind How to beat sticky encounters and How to protect fragile scavengers.
If you are still learning the raid loop, skim How to Play first, then return here.
Deterministic does not mean easy
Because outcomes are deterministic, mistakes feel personal—and they should. Standing in a bad lane, ignoring a stove, or spending the turn that should have been a shove will lose scavengers. The upside is mastery: once you understand a board, you can sequence a clear that looks like magic.
Think in layers: tempo (delete a threat before it acts), geometry (lanes, cover, shove vectors), interactables (damage, burn, stun, bounce angles), and Fear ecology (which Dreadweaver behaviors punish stillness or clustering).
Hazards and shove culture
The fantasy combat pitch is literal: shove a beast into a burning stove, slam another into a partner’s firing line, then keep chaining. Environment damage is not spice; it is baseline DPS. Early crews that try to outshoot every pack without using the room will bleed backpack value through injuries and deaths.
Practical habit: on the first turn of a fight, identify one lethal interactable before you identify your “main target.” Often the correct opener is reposition + shove, not a greedy volley.
Ricochet: the handgun trick shot layer
You can bounce eligible handgun shots off metal interactables to attack enemies behind high cover or at nasty angles. Some ricochetable objects are indestructible; others break. Certain surfaces can infuse shots with effects such as Burning, Plague, or Stun depending on the object.
Rules of thumb from the design:
- Ricochet is mainly for handguns / handgun-like pocket items with the right upgrade level.
- Use bounce lines to flush cover campers instead of walking into their cone.
- Plan the bounce before you move—your feet often create or destroy the angle.
Ricochet is also a teaching tool for board literacy. If you can see a milk can, stove edge, or metal prop as a mirror, you are playing the game the designers built.
Chaining kills and turn continuity
Nightmare Frontier rewards decisive sequencing. Clearing one enemy can open the shove, lane, or momentum you need to keep acting effectively. Do not spread chip damage evenly across a pack if a focused delete collapses their action economy.
Crew composition matters here. A roster that can control space multiplies a shooter’s value. See Crew Builds and the Class Tier List.
Fighting under Nightmare Pressure
As Nightmare Level rises, more Dreadweavers spawn, enemies gain buffs, and hazardous tiles proliferate. Combat stops being a single puzzle and becomes a series of puzzles under fatigue. That is why extraction timing and Fear selection are combat skills too.
- Rising pressure: shorten fights; take the interactable clear even if it “wastes” a fancy setup.
- Horror / fear status threats: prioritize the scavenger about to spiral before optimizing loot damage.
- Dense packs: create chokepoints with objects instead of open-field duels.

Fear matchups are combat matchups
Bringing a spider Fear is not cosmetic. You are booking a spider problem set. Puppet Fears book scissors-and-mobility problems. Deadwood and forest-leaning nightmares punish stillness. Before you blame “balance,” ask whether your crew’s Fear cocktail is inventing an unfair board.
Cross-check Dreadweavers and Deadwood when a fight archetype repeats every raid.
Loadout notes for cleaner turns
Keep at least one reliable handgun path if you want ricochet answers to high cover. Upgrade interactable synergy items before chasing raw number sticks. Leave backpack room for parts that unlock Compounds—combat power often comes from meta unlocks more than a single shiny drop. See Items overview and Compounds & crafting.
A drill you can run tonight
- Enter a low-level District specifically to practice.
- In the first three fights, forbid yourself from finishing without using one hazard or ricochet.
- Extract once you have executed three clean environment kills.
- At the Hideout, note which Fear made the boards awkward and adjust with the Raid Planner.
Mastery in Nightmare Frontier is not memorizing a damage rotation. It is reading a ruined street like a weapon. When that clicks, the Walkthrough and deeper District pushes become much less punishing.
Where ricochet came from
Ricochet landed in the Twisted Prosperity Early Access update (June 2026) and remains core to 1.0 handgun play. Pair this page with Horror Status when Fear-matched boards punish greedy peeks.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers drawn from how Nightmare Frontier actually plays.
Is there hit chance RNG?
No. Combat is deterministic. If a shot is valid for the board state, it resolves without dice rolls.
Which weapons can ricochet?
Ricochet is tied primarily to handguns and handgun-like pocket items at appropriate upgrade levels.
Why ricochet instead of a direct shot?
To bypass high cover, hit awkward angles, and sometimes infuse elemental effects from the bounced surface.
What should I practice first?
Learn shove-into-hazard before fancy multi-bounce lines. Hazards are the most reliable early clear tools.
