Nightmare Frontier Horror Status Guide

How Horror Status works when attacking Fear-born Dreadweavers: +1 Nightmare Pressure per turn until you kill any Dreadweaver, plus Burning, Plague, Push, and Ranged susceptibilities.

Nightmare Frontier Fear-born Dreadweavers

Horror Status is the 1.0 mechanic that punishes Scavengers who poke Fear-born Dreadweavers without a plan. It is not a debuff you shrug off between nodes—it is a ticking Nightmare Pressure tax that turns cautious chip damage into a climb you did not budget for.

What Horror Status does

When you attack a Fear-born Dreadweaver, your crew gains Horror Status. While the status is active, Nightmare Frontier adds +1 Nightmare Pressure per turn until you kill any Dreadweaver on the board—not necessarily the one that inflicted the status.

Read that twice. You do not need to finish the same monster. You need to finish a monster. That distinction saves raids and also creates ugly trade-offs when multiple Dreadweavers are alive and one is nearly dead.

Horror Status stacks with everything else that raises Nightmare Level during a run. If you are already deep in a District, Horror can push you into spawn bands you did not intend to visit that day. Pair this guide with Nightmare Levels and Beat Nightmare Levels before you treat Horror as flavor text.

Susceptibilities: Burning, Plague, Push, Ranged

1.0 also formalized Susceptibilities on many Fear-born Dreadweavers. These are not generic weakness icons—they are combat verbs you should build toward at the Hideout.

  • Burning — hazard and stove synergy; environment kills count double when you set them up deliberately (Combat & Ricochet)
  • Plague — sustained attrition tools; useful when you cannot safely burst a high-HP Dreadweaver in one turn window
  • Push — shove vectors into hazards or, at the Docks, into Overboard instant defeat (Docks & Overboard)
  • Ranged — flush cover campers without walking into melee punishers

Susceptibilities are how Nightmare Frontier tells you which Fear family you invited. If your roster books spider and puppet Fears, expect mixed susceptibility puzzles. Preview combinations in the Raid Planner and read the broader ecology in Fears overview and Dreadweavers.

Combat workflow under Horror

  1. Decide before you shoot. If you open on a Fear-born Dreadweaver, name the kill window turn count aloud.
  2. Prioritize the kill condition, not the loot angle. Horror taxes time; greed turns into pressure.
  3. Use susceptibilities as shortcuts. A Push-vulnerable bruiser near a railing is a two-turn problem, not a five-turn chip fest.
  4. Stabilize the crew first. Horror spirals pair badly with injuries—see Crew Builds for stabilizer roles.
  5. Extract if the board outgrew the contract. Extraction Strategy beats heroic slow clears.

Horror at the Docks and in dense Districts

Horror Status is abstract on paper and brutal on geometry. A crew under +1 pressure per turn makes positioning mistakes—exactly what Docks & Overboard punishes with instant defeat. Forest-leaning nightmares like Deadwood punish stillness; Horror punishes indecision. Together they convert “safe” turns into wipes.

Hideout prep that pays off

Upgrade items that inflict Burning, Plague, Push denial, or reliable Ranged flushes before you chase raw damage. Transfer loadouts that match tomorrow’s Fear plan (Loadout Transfer & Swap) and spend parts at Compounds that unlock those verbs. Horror is a tax; susceptibilities are the receipt you can write off.

Nightmare Frontier never asked Scavengers to fight nightmares politely. Horror Status is the City invoicing you for every shot you take without a finish line.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers drawn from how Nightmare Frontier actually plays.

What triggers Horror Status?

Attacking a Fear-born Dreadweaver applies Horror Status to your crew.

How do I clear Horror Status?

Kill any Dreadweaver on the board. The kill does not have to be the same monster that applied the status.

What are Susceptibilities?

Combat weaknesses on many Fear-born Dreadweavers—commonly Burning, Plague, Push, and Ranged—that you should build loadouts to exploit.

Does Horror stack with Nightmare Level?

Yes. +1 Nightmare Pressure per turn while Horror is active adds to other pressure sources during the raid.
