Nightmare Frontier Compounds and Crafting Guide

How Compounds, unlock trees, and crafting with monster parts work in Nightmare Frontier’s Hideout progression.

Last updated:

Compounds are how Nightmare Frontier turns successful extracts into a different crew. Official materials describe four unlock trees that nightmarize combat style and appearance while unlocking new ways to send Dreadweavers back to whatever hell rented them.

The crafting sentence

Harvest monster parts + junk + Nightmare Essence → upgrade equipment and expand Compounds → enter the next raid with better verbs, not just bigger numbers.

Labor is a cost

A critical 1.0-era systems point: progressing Compounds can require delegating a survivor to work there, permanently removing them from the party roster. That means crafting is not only a material sink—it is a personnel decision. Never feed your only board controller into a tree unless you have a replacement plan (Classes, Crew Builds).

How to choose the next unlock

  1. What kill condition are we committing to (hazard, ricochet, tempo delete)?
  2. Which Fear ecology are we farming this week (Fears)?
  3. Which scavenger can we afford to lose to labor?
  4. Will this unlock shorten Nightmare Level fights (Beat Nightmare Levels)?

Farming for crafting, not vibes

Use How to get trophies logic even for non-quest parts: bring the Fear that drops the material, reserve bag space, extract on acquisition (Extraction Strategy). The Raid Planner exists for this.

Relationship to items and hideout

Compounds sit beside broader gear upgrades. Keep a clean stash philosophy in Items overview and a stable between-raid routine in Hideout. District choice still matters when facilities or anomalies help restock mid-route (Districts & Map).

Common crafting mistakes

  • Unlocking cosmetics-before-verbs when climbs are failing
  • Farming the wrong Fear for ten raids
  • Spending your last flexible scavenger into labor
  • Pushing max Nightmare Level “to craft faster” without surviving the extracts

Crafting is the long game that makes cowardly extracts look genius two hours later. Play the long game on purpose.

Unlock sequencing examples

Sequence for climbers: fight-shortening tree → ricochet support → vanity.
Sequence for collectors: Fear material efficiency → roster recovery tools → cosmetics.
Sequence after wipe streak: anything that reduces Horror spirals or prolongs scavenger stability.

Write your sequence beside the labor cost. If the labor exile would remove your only controller, delay that unlock and farm one more flexible scavenger first (Classes overview, Hideout).

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers drawn from how Nightmare Frontier actually plays.

What are Compounds?

Hideout progression structures with unlock trees that expand combat style, appearance, and power between raids.

Why did my scavenger disappear into a Compound?

Some upgrades require assigning a survivor to Compound work, permanently removing them from the active roster.

What materials should I farm?

Farm the Fear-linked carcass parts your current unlock step demands—not random guns.

Is crafting optional?

You can limp without it, but 1.0’s long-term power is built for Compound investment.
